US rockers KISS donate guitar to children's hospital after Manchester Arena attack

They had to cancel their gig and were so shocked they decided to help the city

By / Manchestereveningnews.co.uk

US rockers Kiss have donated a guitar to Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital for those injured in the Arena bomb.

The bombing forced the band to cancel its own Manchester Arena gig scheduled the week after the outrage as the venue remained a devastated crime scene.

The attack left 22 dead and dozens of others, many of them children, seriously injured.

Singer and guitarist Paul Stanley was determined to do something for the city so donated his unused Ibanez PS120 guitar, which he had planned to play at the concert, to Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital, where many of the injured were treated.

The hospital will now auction the guitar, decorated in the flag of St George, plus VIP tickets for a Kiss gig anywhere in the world, to raise funds for its paediatric intensive care unit.

Paul told the M.E.N: We were devastated by the heinous attack in Manchester Arena and had to do something to support the city.

Royal Manchester Childrens Hospitals incredible work with children was never more evident than after this horrific event.

We are humbled to be able to give something to support them in their ongoing efforts. Knowing that the money raised will go towards purchasing life-support ventilators, our prayers and wishes will continue to help both those affected directly by the attack, and beyond. This night will give everyone an opportunity to do their part in raising as much money as possible for an incredibly worthy cause.

Aside from the guitar, the auction winner will get to meet the band backstage at any of their concerts anywhere in the world.

The prize will be auctioned off at a charity ball in aid of Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital on March 17 at the Lowry Hotel.

The event, hosted by Red Sea Pedestrians charitable organisation, has already raised £827,381 for the hospital since 2011.

Its paediatric intensive care unit needs £740,000 for 26 cutting edge life-support machines.

Maurice Watkins, chairman of the hospitals fundraising board, added: Were delighted that Kiss has donated this incredible prize to be auctioned at the RSP charity ball and want to thank them for their tremendous generosity. In recent testing times staff at the hospital just like the city of Manchester pulled together to make sure the young victims from the attack got the best possible care, as quickly as possible.

The new ventilators we are fundraising for will ensure that the medical teams in our paediatric intensive care unit can assess a patients condition faster and more accurately, resulting in more effective treatment and care at a time when rapid reaction to a patients condition is crucial.

Chances are you've seen numerous iconic pictures by award-winning photographer Lynn Goldsmith, who has photographed every important rock musician and band of the late twentieth century: The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, The Police, Talking Heads, Frank Zappa, Bob Dylan, and Patti Smith, among many others. Published in conjunction with the band, KISS: 1977 - 1980 is the definitive photographic chronicle of KISS at the height of their popularity, showcasing the band on and off stage, in the photo studio, and in unguarded candid moments. From her archive, Goldsmith has compiled fan favorites as well as many never-before-seen photographs, all which perfectly capture the enduring phenomenon that is KISS.

KISS rose to meteoric prominence with their extravagant live performances featuring fire-breathing, blood spitting, guitars bursting into flames, shooting rockets, levitating drum kits, and pyrotechnic showpieces. With makeup and costumes, Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss, and Ace Frehley created characters and origin stories similar to comic book characters: the Starchild, the Demon, the Space Ace, and the Catman. When put all together, it wasnt just a stadium rock concert, it was dynamic performance art that is still on the road today!

Goldsmith, Stanley, and Simmons have created this book as a thanks to the KISS Army, many of whom have been devoted to the band for more than 40 years and have brought their children and grandchildren into appreciating the music, as well as the spectacle of the bands live performances. With a simple matte white laminated padded cover that highlights the KISS logo and edged with gilding, the end result could be compared to a kind of bible, holding the relics that their supporters cherish.

Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley to open rock 'n' roll-themed restaurants in Chicagoland

Who likes to breathe fire, wear makeup and platform shoes, and open restaurants in the Chicago area?

These guys, of course: Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, also known as Demon and Starchild.

Simmons and Stanley, bassist and guitarist, respectively, for 1970s rock band Kiss, plan on bringing their Rock & Brews casual dining chain to Chicagoland in a big way by opening 10 to 15 locations, as well as a corporate office, over the next five to seven years. The first Chicago area restaurant is scheduled to open next year, though the exact location is still being negotiated, the company said.

Such a large expansion in the Chicago market for a chain with no existing presence here is a bold gambit considering the hypercompetitive restaurant industry and recent declines in casual dining. But then again, Simmons is known for spitting blood onstage while shredding bass solos.

Suffice to say, the 67-year-old rock star isn't scared.

"Either Chicago is America or it's not. Everywhere we've gone, it works beyond expectation. The only thing you could say is, it's not going to work here because we're in Zimbabwe," Simmons said over a plate of poached eggs and English muffin on the 12th floor of the Ritz-Carlton.
