Coffee Talk with Tommy Thayer

http://jaygilbert.tumblr.com/

Q: What are a few of your favorite industry moments?

A: Gene Simmons wrote a song with Bob Dylan and Im guessing it was around 1991. One day I got a call from Gene and he says, Get a drummer and a keyboard player and meet me down at Cherokee Studios at 7pm tonight, were going to record a song I wrote with Bob Dylan. Im like wow, seriously? I brought my Les Paul and two acoustic guitars, a 6 and a 12-string that I borrowed from my buddy Marc Ferrari. I get there and sure enough in walks Bob Dylan and his girlfriend. Suddenly Im thinking its Bob Dylan, the guy who influenced the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, unreal. He says let me show you the chord changes and we proceed to pass the 12-string acoustic back and forth. It seemed like one of the most surreal thing Ive ever experienced. He was quiet and eccentric but friendly. The thing that stood out to me more than anything was Gene. He wont mind me saying this, but Ive never seen Gene be anything but Im Gene Simmons and Im the center of the universe, but around Bob Dylan, he was like a kid just happy to be in the room. I do remember taking the strings off the 12-string the next day before I gave it back to Marc. I still have those strings.

Q: If you were to make a playlist of the songs that are part of your DNA, the comfort food that you keep coming back to, that never fail to move and inspire you, what would those tracks be?

A: Hide Your Love Away Eleanor Rigby Across the Universe Old Man The Rain Song Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Elected Brown Sugar Hell Bent For Leather White Punks On Dope Fire and Rain Starship Trooper Lido Shuffle Maybe Im Amazed Dream Police Tequila Sunrise Old School Bad Motor Scooter Do Ya Burn Baker Street Funeral For A Friend Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is Nowheres Too Far Tie Your Mother Down Lucky Man

Q: Who is your mentor? Why?

A: My mentor is my dad. Hes been a leader in the military, in business and the community. Most importantly hes my dad. Hes 95 now and has insight and instincts on most anything. As a US Army lieutenant he led a platoon through France, Germany and Austria in 1945. His unit had direct combat with SS troops and ended up discovering a Nazi death camp near Wels, Austria in May 1945. They liberated the camp and saved the lives of 15,000 Hungarian Jewish refugees. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star for his combat valor. Years later my dad went to Austria on a tour of concentration camps organized by the U.S. Holocaust Council.  When he arrived at the Vienna airport a man approached him and said, Are you James Thayer? my dad said yes. The man said, My name is Wolfe Finkelman, I was 14 years old and if you hadnt arrived when you did, I would have been dead if you had come 24 hours later. You saved my life. The man was a prisoner at the concentration camp that my dads platoon liberated. The $20M Brigadier General James B Thayer Oregon Military Museum is under construction near Portland as we speak. Gene, Paul and Eric have shown great support, as well as my friends Alice Cooper, Robby Krieger and Danny Seraphine for helping in the fundraising for the project. Like me, theyre proud of my dad and the men of the greatest generation. They dont make em like that anymore.

American Rock Stars KISS Show Their Support

www.rmchcharity.org.uk

Legendary rock band KISS is supporting Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital by donating an incredible, money-cant-buy prize to help raise valuable funds for the hospitals Paediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Following the recent tragic event in Manchester the Childrens Hospital has received an out-pouring of support from across the North West and beyond with individuals, schools and businesses wanting to help in any way possible to support the patients and staff at the hospital. This tremendous support has now stretched across the Atlantic with rock stars KISS getting in touch to pledge their support after the awful attack.

Paul Stanley has donated his signature Ibanez PS120 guitar which he was intending to play at their Manchester Arena gig on Tuesday 30th May. The band sadly had to cancel the gig following the attack at the Manchester Arena. The guitar, signed by Paul himself, has never been played and will be up for auction along with VIP tickets, backstage Meet & Greet and photos with the band backstage for four people to a KISS gig anywhere in the world.

Paul Stanley said: We were devastated by the heinous attack in Manchester Arena and had to do something to support the city. Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital's incredible work with children was never more evident than after this horrific event. We are humbled to be able to give something to support them in their ongoing efforts. Knowing that the money raised will go towards purchasing life-support ventilators, our prayers and wishes will continue to help both those affected directly by the attack, and beyond. This night will give everyone an opportunity to do their part in raising as much money as possible for an incredibly worthy cause.

This phenomenal prize will be auctioned off at the Red Sea Pedestrians (RSP) 10th Anniversary Charity ball in aid of Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital, which will be held on17th March 2018 at the Lowry Hotel. The RSP Charitable committee have supported Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital for a number of years with funds raised for the charity totalling to £827,381 since 2011.

The Charity Ball will be raising funds to support the hospitals Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) which cared for many of the young victims who were seriously injured in the Arena attack. Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital is a regional major trauma centre with all paediatric major trauma cases from across the region directed to the hospital, with most of these cases cared for in the hospitals Intensive Care Unit.

A total of £740k is required to ensure the unit is able provide 26 cutting edge life support machines. The new state-of-the-art life support machines are the most advanced mechanical ventilators and the very real impact they will have on the quality of patient care, and the benefits it will mean for medical staff is considerable.

Maurice Watkins CBE, Chairman of Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital Charitys fundraising board added: Were delighted that KISS has donated this incredible prize to be auctioned at the RSP Charity Ball and want to thank them for their tremendous generosity. In recent testing times staff at the hospital just like the city of Manchester pulled together to make sure the young victims from the attack got the best possible care, as quickly as possible. The new ventilators we are fundraising for will ensure that the medical teams in our Paediatric Intensive Care Unit can assess a patients condition faster and more accurately, resulting in more effective treatment and care at a time when rapid reaction to a patients condition is crucial.
