WA mum gets KISS show on the road

By Grace Millimaci / The West Australian

Its not every day one of the worlds most recognized rock bands asks you to be a roadie, but thats exactly what happened to Perth woman Naomi Nary.

Legendary US performers Kiss kicked off the Australian leg of their world tour at Perth Arena on Saturday night and the mother of two was there to help them get the show on the road.

The opportunity came thanks to Legacy Australia, which was invited by the band to select seven war widows to be roadies during the tour.

Band members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer actively support groups in the US that help veterans and their families and wanted to raise awareness of similar causes in Australia.

When made aware of the incredible work Legacy does in Australia for war widows and their families, the band felt very passionately about recognising their strength and courage, the charity said.

Mrs Nary was given the opportunity to prepare and build the VIP area with the bands team.

The special roadie job also involved meeting VIP fans at a private acoustic session and helping manage their photo opportunities before watching the concert.

Legacy Australia chairman David Gray said it was a tremendous opportunity to be supported by one of the most famous rock bands in the world.

These ladies have made such a huge sacrifice and it is fabulous we are offering them something very special in return, Mr Gray said.

KISS kick off Australian leg of world tour with epic show at Perth Arena

By Kristy Symonds /  PerthNow

THEY say if it aint broke, dont fix it. After 42 years, KISS know exactly what their loyal fans love and continued to deliver it in spades with a spectacular show at Perth Arena.

Kicking off the Australian leg of their world tour in front of a sea of painted faces, the legendary US rockers spared no effort or energy in pulling out all their signature gimmicks just as big and as loud as ever.

Before descending from the arena roof on the 43,000kg, fire-spewing rig called The Spider, the band yelled All right, Perth! You wanted the best, you got the best the hottest band in the world, KISS, sending the crowd into an expectant frenzy.

While Gene Simmons ceremoniously slid his famous tongue up and down his bass guitar, breathed a ball of fire and let fake blood bubble down his chin as he played the role of the Demon, Starchild Paul Stanley stuck his guitar pick on his tongue, showing it off to the photographers in the pit below, shimmied and shook, and caught a zip line over to a small rotating stage in the crowd.

Spaceman Tommy Thayer took on an epic solo, shooting fireworks from his guitar, while Catman Eric Singer rose to the roof on his drum kit.

Of course, with The Spider, which features 220 automated lights and 900 pieces of pyrotechnics, powered by 400,000 watts of sound, there was fire and lots of it.

But the band were hardly just going through the motions as they worked through their finely tuned and carefully choreographed routine.

Opening with Detroit Rock City, KISS performed hits and fan favourites including Deuce,Psycho Circus, I Love it Loud and War Machine.

And, in the same way they have stayed the same, they implored Perth not to change its make up.

Stay the way you are, frontman Paul Stanley told the screaming crowd, after describing the city as a little gem.

Later, he added: Every time I get up on stage here, its an honour to be able to play for you people.

Hell or Hallelujah, Calling Dr Love, God of Thunder, Love Gun and Black Diamond were also included in the nearly two-hour set.

The three-song encore featured Shout it Out Loud, I Was Made for Lovin You and Rock and Roll All Nite as huge amounts of confetti rained down on the satisfied crown and more fire blasted from the stage.

KISS last performed at Perth Arena in 2013, ending a nine-year absence from WA soil.

The band will perform in Adelaide on Tuesday before playing shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle and Brisbane.

KISS kicks off Australian leg of 40th anniversary tour with raucous Perth performance

By Jennifer Smith For Daily Mail Australia

KISS kicked off the Australian leg of their 40th anniversary world tour on Saturday with an electric performance in Perth.

Dressed in their signature face paint, the band performed a roll of hits at the city's arena, with Gene Simmons taking centre stage.

He was joined by band mates Paul Stanley, Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer, with the quartet donning typically outlandish costumes for the show.
Saturday's performance marks the beginning of the Australian leg of their tour which will see the band put on eight sows across the country and in New Zealand.

It will conclude when their KISS Cruise sets sail later this month.

Earlier this week frontman Gene Simmons appeared on The Project to tell of his excitement at returning to Australia as part of the tour.

'It's always been such a treat to come to Australia, we love Australia,' he told the show's panel of judges before adding cheekily: 'It has to be something in the water that makes the women so beautiful.'

The 66-year-old went on to reminisce over how the band came together, telling the Network Ten program that they decided to start wearing make-up in order to stand out.

'In those days we were just four idiots off the streets of New York, all we knew was that we wanted to put together the band that we'd never seen before on stage, so many times we'd go to see our favourite bands and they were looking at their shoes.'

While Simmons said 'none' of the original members were responsible for their decision to wear make-up, they had largely stuck to the same aesthetic since first applying the thick eye white and black markings on their faces.

'One day we just looked at each other and said "uh, let's put on make-up." 'Just like that. We went down to one of those Woolworths stores and we bought clown make-up and mirrors.

'We went back to our loft that was rat-infested and started applying it and what you see today is pretty much what you would have seen then.'
