Helsinki is painting masks on these famous statues in an epic KISS tribute

Created by James Martin / LonelyPlanet.com

Next week will see rock legends KISS returning to Finland on 4 May for a concert at Hartwell Arena in Helsinki, and the city is preparing a pretty epic welcome in the form of four huge statues wearing masks that mimic the bands iconic black and white facepaint.

Located at Helsinki Central Railway Station, the four Men of Rock statues are seen by hundreds of thousands of people every day passing by, and have become known as a famous landmark in the city. This week will see four local KISS fans getting the opportunity to paint five-foot tall masks that will adorn the statues ahead of the bands arrival.

Proving to be a haven for heavy metal fans and bands alike, its no surprise that Finland knows how to represent their love of rock music on such a large scale, and it hasnt gone unnoticed. The band feels that the idea of giving the fans such a great opportunity is truly fantastic, said Mark Stroman, a representative of KISS.

The masks are due to go up this Friday, and will be on display and visible for all to see until 5 May. A larger event is planned for the day of the concert that will welcome fans from around the country, many of which will pass through the railway station and past the for Men of Rock.

KISS Reno Veteran Roadie for a Day

Amazing!  Truly amazing, is how I would describe my experience as the Veteran Roadie for KISS on April 21st in Reno, NV!  The entire KISS production crew, management and all the band members themselves went out of their way to ensure that my guest and I were not disappointed.  Everyone was friendly, professional and asked if there was anything at all that they could do to make my experience even better.  I've been a KISS fan since 1975 and never dreamed that I'd have such an opportunity.  Even after waiting 40 plus years, dreams can come true and this was a life changing dream come true!   I'm flattered and honored to have been selected and dedicate my night back stage with KISS to all of my Marine Corps Brothers and Sisters!

Sincerely,
Russ Doty

About Russ Doty: Major (retired) USMC

Life-long KISS fan!  When I heard "KISS Alive" in 1975 while still in high school, I became instantly hooked.  Armed with KISS's never surrender attitude, I completed college in 1982 and became a U.S. Marine Corps Officer and a Attack Helicopter Pilot flying both the AH-1J Sea Cobra and the AH-1W Super Cobra.  I flew 56 Combat Missions during Operation Desert Storm and Retired in 2002 after 20 Active Duty years.  After retirement from the Marines, I formed the successful KISS Tribute Band:  LOVE GUN which is based out of New Orleans and regionally touring (www.lovegunneworleans.com / www.facebook.com/lovegunneworleans). I am currently, a Captain with a private company flying business jets.  I married my college sweet heart 33 years ago and we have one daughter.   To be recognized by my hero, Paul Stanley, would truly be a dream come true!

Quote: "Honestly, I've never won anything in my life until now!  To be on stage, even briefly, with my rock and roll heroes is winning the Grand Prize!"

Teenage Cancer Trust makes sure the seven young people aged 13 to 24 diagnosed with cancer every day dont face it alone. They help young people and their families deal with the many ways cancer affects your body, mind and life. They work in partnership with the NHS, providing expert staff and specialist units in Principal Treatment Centres for cancer and bring young people together so they can support each other.

They also give presentations in schools so young people understand more about cancer and go to the doctor earlier. And they help medical professionals and politicians understand why young people with cancer need specific support.

Almost half of young people with cancer are not treated in their units. Instead they are treated in hospitals where there isnt the same level of expertise, and where they might never meet another young person with cancer. This is a scary and lonely experience, and it must change. Theyre building a wider Nursing & Support Service within the NHS to help all young people, wherever they receive treatment. To make this happen, they need to raise more than £20 million every year by 2020.
