WHO THINKS KISS SHOULD BE IN THE HALL OF FAME?

By Lee Hawkins

With the Rock and Roll Hall of Fames 2012 induction ceremony coming up in April, one of the stars of the rock band Kiss says he continues to be perplexed by the fact that his band has yet to be voted in.

Kiss lead singer and guitarist Paul Stanley said he considers the fact that Kiss hasnt made it, despite the fact that the band has been eligible since 1999, a slight to the bands fans. I know that its important to a lot of the fans. Certainly if we were to get inducted, I would accept it on behalf of the fans, because it matters to them, Stanley said. But I dont need validation from an organization where I dont even know who is doing the voting.

Stanleys comments follow an on-camera interview he gave the WSJ earlier this year in which he spoke candidly about the groups entrepreneurial success. Kiss and Motley Crue members recently announced a joint summer tour at a press conference. Kiss bassist Gene Simmons told Rolling Stone at the conference that Kiss absence from the Hall of Fame has become a joke.

Stanley told the WSJ that he believes the Hall of Fame judges have intentionally excluded Kiss.

I know people who know that for fact. There are board members who have said, Kiss wont get in as long as Im alive, Stanley said. The funny thing about that is really that to have such vehement feeling about it is something that perhaps they should work out on a psychiatrists couch.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame media representatives did not respond to e-mail requests for comment.

Stanley believes the organization, like some of the bands critics, has unfairly stigmatized Kiss for its marketing-savvy. Kiss has built a multimillion-dollar business that has led to nearly 100 million album sales and the Kiss brand has been licensed more than 3,000 times.

Somehow in some of these peoples warped perspective, being commercially successful or being adept at marketing yourself somehow is contradictory to art and music, Stanley said. They would much more want to welcome the starving artist who winds up on a VH1 program having spent all their money, with everyone wondering, What ever happened to so and so?By Lee Hawkins

Stanley told the WSJ that hes not just bothered by the fact that Kiss hasnt been included. Other deserving acts have also been overlooked, he said, naming rock bands Rush and Deep Purple. He said he doesnt consider some of the performers that have been voted in to be rock artists. Lauren Nyro, for example, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame posthumously at the induction ceremony on April 14. I happen to be a huge fan of Lauren Nyro, who has as much to do with rock and roll as Peter, Paul and Mary do. She was a very brilliant writer, but her music is not Rock and Roll, Stanley said.

Stanley said he is excited to hit the road for Kiss 40-date show tour with Motley Crue that starts in July. The two bands havent toured together since 1982, when a young Motley Crue opened for Kiss.

Stanley says that despite his complaints, hes not going to lose sleep over the Hall of Fame exclusion.

We are businessmen and musicians, Stanley said. And the music speaks for itself.

KISS has been the subject of several comic book series with several different publishers. Why did IDW pick the group to work with?

Chris Ryall: It pretty much follows the way we choose to pursue any license: were fans of the material. Both Tom Waltz and I are lifelong KISS fans; and add to that the fact that we produced a line of Simmons Comic Group releases with Gene Simmons a few years back and its just been something weve always wanted to do. Some of my earliest comic-reading moments are of enjoying the KISS Super Specials that Marvel produced in the 70s, and its a personal thrill to not only be able to carry on with Kiss comics but to now write them myself, too.

Tom Waltz: As Chris states, we tend not to pursue any license at IDW that wont have an editor behind it who is a fan and willing to champion it through the long process of getting it approved and into print. In the case of KISS, Chris and I are not only champions of the license, were uber-fans of the band and their music, not to mention the KISS comics from various other publishers in the past. Like Chris, I ate up those Marvel KISS comics and to now be able to be a part of the ongoing adventures of our hard-rockin, kabuki-wearin heroes is a real highlight of my career as a writer/editor.
